Skills for Jobs

Skills for Jobs (SfJ) - Recruitment for Success

  • The purpose of SfJ is to improve the employment prospects of 378 workless adults with particular barriers to employment, through a programme of tailored support and training.
  • The target sectors for vacancies are retail, port & maritime, logistics, sport and leisure, tourism and hospitality.
  • The target groups for learners are lone parents, over 50s, incapacity benefit, learning difficulties, disabilities, ex offenders, homeless, those in Deprived Area Fund (DAF) wards.
  • The programme is part of the Priority Routeways programme and is supported by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
  • Learners will be trained by Liverpool Community College and Knowsley Community College.
  • Learners will undergo a standard induction followed by an employer specific training route, followed by a work trial and for some, a sustainable employment.
  • If learners are retained in employment after the work trial, the employer can take advantage of further LSC funded programmes such as SkillWorks, Modern Apprenticeship and Train to Gain. The LSC is keen to see the integration of these products with Skills for Jobs.
  • The key attraction of SfJ to employers is that the project provides support in recruiting for their vacancies. The college will advertise the vacancy, engage suitable learners, get them ready for work, train them in employer specific skills and provide the employer with a free work trial to assess their ability. What the employer guarantees in return is an interview for every learner.
  • If the employer wants to interview in one week or eight weeks, Liverpool Business Services (LBS - the employer arm of Liverpool Community College) work to the employer's timetable.  The target individuals are referred to LBS by Jobcentre Plus or through the college's own outreach community learning centres.
